midbrain reticular formation

The term midbrain reticular formation (MRF) refers to a histologically defined composite structure in the midbrain (MBR). It includes the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), cuneiform nucleus (CNN ) and subcuneiform nucleus (CNNs) of the human ( Carpenter-1983 ), macaque ( Olszewski-1952 ), rat ( Swanson-2004 ) and mouse ( AMBA-2024 ).
      Activation of the MRF triggers the orienting response ( Vinogradova-2001 ) of the interrupt control system ( Bowden-2021 ). Updated 25 Apr 2025.
