hippocampal region
Acronym:
The term hippocampal region refers to one of two subdivisions of the hippocampal formation in the Functional CNS Model - Rat ( Swanson-2004 ). It is a part of cerebral cortex defined on the basis of internal structure and function. Located on the ventromedial surface of the hemisphere in the rat, it is composed of the dentate gyrus, the CA fields, the fasciola cinerea and the indusium griseum.
The hippocampal region of the rat contains the same internal structures as the archicortex except tha, in the rat, the subiculum is classified as part of the rodent retrohippocampal region ( Swanson-2004 ). In the primate (and the NeuroNames standard hierarchy), it is classified as part of hippocampal complex.
