hindbrain
Acronym: HBr
The term hindbrain (HBR) refers to one ot four components of the brain as defined by surgical dissection. The others are the forebrain (FBR) and midbrain (MBR) rostral to it and the medulla (MDL) caudal to it. Its rostral boundary with the MBR is a nominally coronal plane located at the caudal margin of the inferior colliculus (ICL) dorsally and the rostral margin of the basal pons (PONb) ventrally. The caudal boundary with the MDL is defined by a nominally horizontal plane at thejunction of the cerebral aqueduct (AQU) dorsally and caudal margin of the PONb ventrally.
The hindbrain is composed of two parts, the pons (PON) and the cerebellum (CBL). Substructures of the hindbrain are derived for the most part from the embryonic Rhombencephalon ( Swanson-2015 ). Final 16 Jun 2025.
